Caring for Your Old Line Board
Preserving Craftsmanship for Years to Come
An Old Line board is more than a functional surface — it's a handcrafted piece built from natural hardwoods, designed to be used, appreciated, and passed down. Like any fine woodwork, proper care ensures it continues to look and perform its best over time.
Fortunately, ongoing maintenance is simple, and a little attention goes a long way.
Daily Use: Simple Habits That Matter
Old Line boards are built to be used regularly. With a few basic practices, you can prevent unnecessary wear and preserve their natural beauty.
- Clean the surface after use with a damp cloth
- Dry immediately — never allow water to sit on the board
- Avoid soaking, standing water or placing in a dishwasher
- Do not use abrasive pads or harsh cleaners
Wood is a natural material. Treat it with the same care you would fine furniture or hardwood flooring.
Conditioning: Feeding the Wood
Hardwood boards gradually lose moisture with regular use. Periodic conditioning restores oils to the wood, helping prevent drying, cracking, or dullness.
When to Condition
- When the board looks dry or chalky
- When water no longer beads on the surface
- Typically every 3–6 weeks for frequently used boards
What to Use
- Food-safe mineral oil
- Wood conditioners made from mineral oil and natural waxes
Avoid vegetable oils, olive oil, or cooking oils — they can spoil and leave unpleasant odors.
How to Condition Your Board
- Clean and dry the board thoroughly
- Apply a generous amount of oil with a clean cloth
- Allow the oil to soak in for several hours or overnight
- Wipe off any excess oil
For heavily used boards, a second coat may be applied after the first has absorbed.
Built to Last
Every Old Line board is crafted from premium hardwoods and finished with food-safe materials. With basic care and occasional conditioning, your board will serve beautifully for many years — and often generations.
Proper care isn't about perfection.
It's about respect for the material and the craftsmanship behind it.
